It has been another busy and exciting year for the Mountain Goat Trail Alliance in 2012. We are encouraged by our progress toward completing the trail, and have several exciting new projects moving forward in 2013.
In 2012, we held several fundraisers to match our grant to build the Sewanee to Monteagle section of the trail. In April we held an event at the reopening of Pearl’s restaurant in Sewanee; We followed that up with an event at Modern Dave’s in Monteagle, another sponsoring business located along the trail; We held our annual meeting in September at Mooney’s Market in Sewanee, one of our newest sponsors.
By November, we secured all the easements necessary to build the Sewanee to Monteagle section, and finalized designs for the construction phase. If you look along the north side of Highway 41A just west of Monteagle, you can see the flags marking where construction will begin in coming weeks.
In December, we signed an agreement with The Land Trust for Tennessee to help acquire in fee more than 20 miles of abandoned railbed from Monteagle to its terminus in Palmer. In addition, we continue to work with officials from Monteagle and Tracy City to help lead construction and economic development efforts along the trail as a true collaboration across the South Cumberland region.
We are very grateful for those who have given their time, effort, and financial support to the Mountain Goat Trail Alliance. We hope you will help us continue our strategic toward completing the trail; your support makes a real difference in the way our South Cumberland communities grow and prosper.
Happy Holidays, and best wishes for a blessed and safe 2013.
